6 reasons to add ultrasound to a mammogram

KPI Breast Cancer Awareness

1. Mammography is an imperfect test

Mammography has been around for a while, but has been the primary way of detecting breast cancer. However, the overall sensitivity of mammograms is about 84%, which means it misses about 16% of breast cancers [1]. Additionally, it may miss over a third of cancers in dense breasts [2].

2. Critical for Dense Breasts

Over 40% of women have Dense Breast Tissue [3], and mammograms are less effective at detecting cancer in dense breasts. The reason is that both cancer and dense breast tissue appear white on a mammogram [4]. Most women don’t know if they have dense breasts, information that usually isn’t conveyed back to the patient. Ask your radiologist if you have dense breast tissue [5]. In addition, extremely dense breasts have increased risks of breast cancer [6].

3. Early detection crucial in increasing survival rates

A mammogram alone may miss a tumor year after year, until it has developed into advanced stages where survival rates can be significantly lower. Ultrasound technology can detect tumors in its early stages which is crucial in increasing survival rates. In a study involving more than 70,000 women, ultrasound combined with mammography resulted in correctly identifying 91% of the cancers versus 77% from mammography alone [7].

4. Non-invasive

Do you know how painful a mammogram can be? Ultrasound screenings are painless, and do not require needles, or injections. Pulse-like sounds that change in pitch as the blood flow is monitored and measured. It takes between 15-30 minutes for an examination to complete [8].

5. Radiation-free

Ultrasounds do not use radiations, and so there is no additional exposure when combining with mammograms. On the other hand, mammography uses very small doses of ionizing radiation [9], which can potentially lead to health concerns, and risks.

6. Less expensive than other methods

Compared to breast MRI, another detection method, ultrasound is only a fraction of the cost for the added benefits. On average, a breast MRI costs $900 [10], whereas a breast ultrasound can cost around $200 out of pocket, if not covered by insurance [11].
