Service for Philips CX50
Free technical support is available from KPI during installation and over the course of the standard limited warranty. Technical support is available after the warranty period at an hourly cost per issue.
Maintenance for Philips CX50
KPI recommends the use of a surge protector along with a dedicated power outlet. Probes should be disinfected after every use with a disinfectant wipe proven not to damage the lens (KPI recommends SonoWipes for this.) One PM visit (preventative maintenance) every year.

Philips CX50 hardware revisions
Philips first launched the CX50 in 2009 as their first portable ultrasound machine. The 2009 revision used A.0 hardware that ran Windows XP as the software platform. The upgrade to B.0 hardware implemented a new more powerful ComEx motherboard that ran Windows 7. From the exterior the CX50 has not changed except for port updates since the initial launch. CX50 reliability and stability has improved dramatically in revision B.0 of the hardware and for this KPI does not recommend buying earlier versions unless upgraded by Philips.
Philips CX50 software revisions
Every few years Philips has released a new software update to the CX50 and they call these updates “Vision” and the year it was launched. Vision 2010 software replaced the initial release for the CX50, and then Vision 2012, and finally Vision 2013 Version 3.0. This final version of the CX50 software added many powerful options such as Live 3D and Live xPlane to fully take advantage of the x7-2t TEE transducer. For this reason KPI recommends purchasing at least Vision2013 software for the CX50.

Advanced CX50 Transducers: PureWave & xMatrix
The Philips CX50 has the most advanced transducers ever used on a portable ultrasound machine, including three single crystal PureWave transducers; the [ 1 – 5 MHz ] C5-1 convex, the [ 5 – 8 MHz ] C10-3v endovaginal, and the [ 1 – 5 MHz ] S5-1 adult cardiac sector probe. Single crystal transducers are able to significantly improve image quality even at deep penetration, something very important when scanning large patients. No other portable has single crystal transducers, as the technology usually is only used on premium level ultrasound machines. The Philips CX50 also can use the [ 2 – 7 MHz ] X7-2t xMatrix transesophegeal transducer which has excellent image quality and can image in multiple planes at once as well as image in 4D mode. Only the CX50 among portable ultrasound machines has a 4D TEE probe. The ViewFlex Xtra catheter developed by St. Jude Medical is also compatible with the CX50 and is used for ICE where the catheter is inserted inside the heart through the left femoral vein.
Popular Philips CX50 Transducers
The amazing C5-1 PureWave convex and the S5-1 PureWave cardiac sector are the most popular transducers for the CX50 providing excellent imaging even on heavier patients. The [ 3 – 12 MHz ] L12-3 is the most popular linear for the CX50 as it offers the best blend of scanning possibilities and is the most affordable linear.
How the CX50 compares with other Philips systems
The Philips CX50 was launched in 2009 as the first Philips portable ultrasound machine. In late 2011 Philips also launched the CX30 as a lower priced portable that looked nearly identical on the outside but used less expensive transducers and had no access to PureWave or the X7-2t TEE. The CX30 was later discontinued in 2014. The Philips Visiq tablet portable was launched in 2014 at a much lower price point and feature set. The Philips CX50 remains the most advanced portable in the Philips lineup.
Philips CX50 vs Affiniti 70
The CX50 and the Affiniti 70 are very similar, using many of the same transducers including the PureWave probes. The Affiniti 70 as a console has a much larger monitor, a touchscreen, and a wider set of transducers including 4D probes. The processor is also more powerful, but the CX50 is able to use the X7-2t in full 4D and xPlane mode where as the Affiniti 70 can only use 2D mode on the X7-2t.
Other brands competing with the CX50
The closest competitor to the Philips CX50 from GE would be the Vivid-q which has similar cardiac performance and quantification software, but which lacks the 4D xMatrix TEE. The Vivid-q is one of the best options for ICE procedures for the compact operating room and EP labs. Both the CX50 and the Vivid-q have similar cardiac image quality and are in the premium price category. The CX50 however is a shared service ultrasound that offers OB/GYN and Radiology applications and transducers whereas the Vivid-q is a cardiovascular specific system. The Mindray M7 is positioned in the midrange price category, but it’s cardiovascular performance, and quantification software is strong for the price. It however lacks the 4D Matrix TEE function of CX50. The HM70A is the closest competitor to the Philips CX50 in general imaging and OB/GYN from Samsung but the HM70A like the M7 is a midrange rather than a premium portable, and it’s cardiac features are noticeably less than the CX50 as it has no TEE probe or neonatal cardiac sector probe. The HM70A does offer 4D probes for OB/GYN and is competitive when you take into account that it is whole price category less expensive.

AutoSCAN image optimization: This Philips CX50 feature automatically and continuously optimizes the brightness of the image at the default gain and TGC settings for the best image quality. It can be turned on and off as needed.
iSCAN intelligent optimization: This feature provides automatic one-button global image optimization on the Philips CX50 through AI adjustment of TGC, Doppler and receiver gain, compression curve, Doppler PRF, and Doppler baseline.
Advanced XRES adaptive image processing: This is an advanced real-time speckle reduction feature standard on the CX50 that also enhances edge definition.
SmartExam protocols: A step by step user-customizable set of protocols on the Philips CX50 that can help speed exams and increase consistency.
PureWave crystal technology: Philips version of the single crystal transducer technology that improves image quality on the CX50 at higher penetration. This makes it easier to diagnose difficult-to-scan patients.

SonoCT: This is real-time compound imaging on the Philips CX50 that obtains multiple coplanar, tomographic images from different viewing angles, then combines them into a single compound image at real-time frame rates.
PureWave Crystal technology: A breakthrough a single crystal technology on the CX50 that allows greater acoustic efficiency and bandwidth than piezoelectric (Ceramic) technology.

Applications or Apps are the types of exams or studies that an ultrasound machine can do. More than this if an ultrasound machine supports a specific application it will have calculations, measurement and reporting software included to support those apps and make them useful in a clinical environment.
The Philips CX50 is a shared service ultrasound machine and offers the broadest selection of applications possible; only 4D for OB/GYN is not available.
